Great video and great points. I think you may have the wrong idea about feminism though. The major things you found to criticize about those books ARE feminist. Girls should not be taught that that is their sole purpose in life anymore than boys should be told that those standards are supposed to be their ideal. It would be interesting to see if there are any books in that genre that frame the plot around a potential couple as equals. Although I’m guessing they won’t be set pre 21st century.

All romance novels suck, not just Christian ones.

You are awesome. And very funny. And a feminist, at least as I understand the term (which is a good thing). God bless you 🙂

As a romance author, I find this video insightful. I now have an interesting perspective of what some readers may find distasteful.

This is probably why, when I drop the name of an author who IS worth reading (like George MacDonald) on Christian fiction groups on Facebook, fewer than 1% of member show any interest whatsoever. He has elements of romance in his novels, but they have so much more substance that people used to this kind of stuff would get bored of him very quickly.

It's funny listening to the book descriptions of men after watching your videos on purity lol

they arent just borderline, they are completely wrong for Christians to read. first they are total FICTION. what does fiction mean? it means NOT TRUE. what is an UNTRUTH? it's a LIE. Christians need to stay away from most all forms of book/movie/tv/sports/violence "entertainment" because it is a total WASTE of God's gift of time and does damage to the character. We are to follow Jesus and He did not spend/waste countless hours in seeking entertainment. When He was not sleeping of eating He was doing God's work, praying, preaching etc. time is short. dont waste it because you can never get it back.

I was deep in them at ten, eleven years of age, especially Beverly Lewis… my dad used to discourage me and looking back I think I understand why… but I hope Karen Kingsbury is excluded from your blacklist, Katie?

This just perfectly encapsulates the reasons I wasn't allowed to read Christian romance novels.

This is damaging to guys to because the books say we have to live up to the standards of those attractive mens looks to get a hot woman on our arms with her perfect body parts too, but that's something that's difficult to do to

Nothing wrong with a woman who finds pleasure in making food for her husband and family. And there’s nothing wrong with telling your daughter, that it’s OK for her to be a wife and a mother.

If you don’t mind me asking Katie, and everyone else in the comments. What exactly are the ways to make a Christian romance novel or ANY Christian novel good? I am planning on being a writer and I have heard so many negative things on why some Christian novels are bad. Can you give me some things on what makes a Christian novel about anything bad and what should I put in to make them all good.

Most of them books are just fantasy not how reality works. But the Bible is accurate that is what I live by. There's no such thing as a perfect woman nor is there a such thing as a perfect man.

Ok so I’m 62 and I wholeheartedly agree with you!….my romance novels were the old Grace Livingston Hill books….very clean, to be sure, but most of them were all alike….my favorite ones …GLH…were the stories that involved children or had some type of mystery or adventure to them…..I read a lot of random Christian books that were romance but back then they were very clean…..I can’t stand the Amish romances, either….as a matter of fact, I am in a book club in one of the categories is to read a book by an author you dislike… So I’m reading the covenant by Beverly Lewis… An Amish romance… I do not read her books…boring!🥱

Bruh you are so funny. I will say though, from what you said, you are a feminist. "I think I can be something besides a baby factory." (What you said) Is a basic tenant of feminism. The "We should deny male children breast milk as to make them physically weak." stuff that sometimes gets posted online and tasked about…yeah that's something else. The fact that people lump the two together is harmful to the former.

I have to admit, Jane Austen is better. Most Christian romance novels are very predictable.

I agree with one exception: Francine Rivers books. They're a tad on the dramatic side, but they're still the best (and possibly only good) romance novels out there. (Other than Jane Austen of course)

Your description of the female characters literally made me envision that animated red-haired princess in Brave. lol. Try reading Redeeming Love, Francine Rivers or A Chain of Flames, Blaine Cleaver. Neither are so 'powder-puff' silly or unrealistic. I also have hope for some of the Charles Martin books but I haven't read any of them yet. Great Video, by the way!!

I can’t believe I found this video again after being recommended the book cover video. I can’t believe this video was relatively unknown. When I saw the overwhelming collection of Christian romance novels I remember wishing and wondering if I could have a hobby that I was so involved in and commited to. Now, what 6 years later I ended up being super into creepypasta narrations and scary story communities. I feel in part that moment inspired me to really grow into a somewhat niche, somewhat dumb, amateur fun interest which motivates me to try writing on my own, and helped me enjoy my youth without feeling that the things I liked weren’t real enough or were overly cringy. Ik this is kinda personal but I was thinking about it a lot and wanted to say thanks ig.
