I am an old man and have been reading since science fiction since the "golden age". I have read the Martian from your list and agree that it is an excellent book. From your descriptions of the other books I have decided to give bothe Illuminae and Skyward a try. I would like to suggest a couple of books that literally blew my socks off to you: Spin by Robert Wilson and Gateway by Fred Pohl. Both are stand alone and both are powerful. I am going to try your two books. You try my two suggestions. You also mentioned a book called recursion which sounded a lot like China Mievilles' "The City and The City" where two cities intersect one another and you have to "unsee' what is on the other side. All three of the books I mentioned won Hugo Awards for Best Novel of the Year. While this is an honor it does not necessarily mean that the book is a good read. However, I think you will enjoy the first two books I mentioned. KEEP READING! Maybe someday you will have read as much science fiction as I have. 🙂

The Martian was fantastic! Thanks for reviewing sci-fi books, it’s one of my favorite genres! Also the Murderbot series by Martha Wells is super fun! Also loved Blake Crouch’s books! Another author that is kinda mind trippy is Peter Clines. 14 (Threshold, #1) and The Fold (Threshold #2) are awesome under appreciated sci-if gems!

I just wanted to thank you and let you know that I come to this channel every day just to be a silent spectator in your channel’s growth. I’m in love with the series! It’s my first sci fi book and I’m definitely hooked.

I have a couple of sci-fi recommendations for you, I loved a lot of the same books as you or they are on my tbr. If you ever want a reread for the Illuminae series they are also great audiobooks. I would also recommend the Expanse series and Murderbot Diaries.

I'd classify Red Rising more along the lines of Dystopian and Fantasy…

I LOVED the Martian. The movie is practically the same as the book and it makes it so much more entertaining. People need to know though going into it that it gets a lil racist, and moderately sexist. It's nit picky, but all the female characters are all the same. Emotional and unstable and quick to start crying. Mitch is my favorite.

I've been trying to find some good hard Scifi novels. I'm definitely going to look into Illuminae and Dark Matter. They seem right up my alley

As a fellow fan of Skyward (and anything Sanderson) you might consider checking out Aurora Rising. It’s in the same vein as far as following the training of a squadron (or in this case a crew for a single ship) and then following their adventure and pursuit across the galaxy.

Back when I was younger I enjoyed The Stanless Steel Rat series by Harry Harrison nowadays anything written by Peter F Hamilton are my goto sci-fi reads. Excelent characters plots etc, bad guys have beleivable reasons for their actions its all good. Dip a toe into some of his short storys compendiums like "2nd chance of Eden" or "Manhatten in reverse" which'll set you up for some of his big trilogys or stand alones like "The Great North Road" or "Fallen Dragon" are also excelent reads and possibly less intimadating.

I absolutely love the Super Powereds series by Drew Hayes. I’ve read the books all the way (Year 1, Year 2, then Corpies ((a side story)), Year 3, then Year 4) through twice and listened to the audiobooks seven times. I can’t fanboy enough.

The Southern Reach trilogy by Jeff Vandermeer is a great mind bender. The first book, Annihilation, was made into a movie starring Natalie Portman.

Hyperion, if you like outer space stuff and FTL communication/travel. Lots of political and human elements as well. Great character development. I started it after I finished the Dune series and I wasn’t disappointed.

On a cold January night, Sharon Lemke heads outside to see a lunar eclipse
when she notices something odd at the house across from her backyard.
Through her neighbor’s kitchen window, she sees what appears to be a little
girl washing dishes late at night. But the Fleming family doesn’t have a
little girl, and even if they did, why would she be doing housework at that
late hour? It would be so easy for Sharon to just let this go, but when
eighteen-year-old Niki, a former foster child, comes to live with Sharon, she
notices suspicious activity at the Flemings’ house as well. When calling
social services doesn’t result in swift action, the two decide to investigate
    on their own

Don’t donate to Black Lives Matter. It’s been proven they aren’t what they claim to be. Original heads of the organization are denouncing it today and support for blm has plummeted. They are a Trojan horse for communism. They burn loot and murder. A innocent mother was gunned down in my state capitol Indianapolis simply for saying all lives matter at some one who just said Black Lives Matter. They killed her for it. Look it up. Blm are evil. They do nothing to help black people. They take all that money people donate and they keep it for themselves, they buy mansions in rich white neighborhoods opposed to elevating their own people. More unarmed whites are killed by police than unarmed blacks. I wanted to keep politics out of it but I seen your link and I had to let you know your misinformed at the very least and brainwashed at the worse case scenario

I really enjoyed the Humans by Matt Haig. It's about this alien who comes to earth because a math professor is about to solve an equation that the aliens believe humans aren't ready for. So they murder him, erase the equation, and then the alien replaces the professor to track down the last evidence of it. It's unexpectedly funny in places, sometimes predictable, but also deep in the way it helps you gain a new perspective on humans as a whole. It's a fairly simple and easy read.

Fantasy Sci-Fi serials, movies and novels seem to evoke epic elements such as Supernatural Transcendentalism or Mythological legends. Because he describes it in such a way in religious events.
