Have you ever read The Good Son by Jeong You-Jeong? I loved that book and would love to hear what you think about it. If you do read it, don't read any reviews before picking it up – some are unintentionally spoilery!

I've seen When No One Is Watching pop up on my IG feed a few times. I LOVE books set in my hometown, NYC. Hey Cindy, good to see you!

cindy, i'm usually the one snorting at these kind of comments, but you need to know this:
so i've just (incredibly painstakingly) moved to switzerland, its day 5 and i dont speak the language, everything closes at 7pm and i'm down with a really bad flu (regular one), and i was just sitting here in my misery feeling really sad about the prospect making dinner and the options i had — given that i forgot to buy groceries in time — with a fever of 100F. and the moment you held up your fried rice, i remembered that I KNOW HOW TO MAKE FRIED RICE, and now my evening has been saved, i just went to soak the fckn rice, i love you and you probably cured my fever thank

I think the turn of the key is a retelling of a turn of the screw.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who can sleep for more than 9 hours at a time, but it’s been a while since I slept for more than 12 hours straight

1. That’s the amount of fried rice I ate when I was nine months pregnant
2. I don’t share a bed with my partner, but he does come up and use my bed when he doesn’t like my music, even that pisses me off
3, Don’t Nanise usually take the husband, not kill the kids?
4.I’m 70 and act like seven,

I actually enjoyed reading Flatshare even though I have a hard time reading Leon's distinct POV which made me assume that maybe he is autistic or in the spectrum of some sort (i dunno he just gave off autistic vibes to me)

the premise of “When No One Is Watching” sounds similar to the movie “Vampires vs. the Bronx.” minus the vampires. at least i think.

Are all these murder nanny books just happening because the authors resent/fear their nannies being homewreckers (the classic cliché) and so they turn them into book villains?

Okay when no one is watching was so good IMO that shit was terrifying sooo I need more like that that also incorporates social justice issues into a thriller.

I agree about In A Holidaze. I usually like Christina Lauren (The Honey Don’t List and the Unhoneymooners are two of my favorites) but In A Holidaze was GOD AWFUL!!! They were all so boring! I didn’t care! Watching her live the same boring week over and over was boring! Then the continuation was so boring! I like Christina Lauren but this was a miss.

I am very late but I went through all the comments and since no one mentioned it:
"Because this is my first life" is a Kdrama with a similar set-up to Flatshare.
The premise is silly but high costs of housing are the reason here as well and there's the fake marriage trope but it is a very delicately and thoughtful written series with nuanced characters which tackles topics of grief, emancipation, feminism, family and sexual assault in a very thoughtful way.
So if anyone reads the comments several months later and is looking for something new to watch I can only recommend this romcom/ slice of life show

Are we sure it wasn't a time loop and not just her life being so bland and boring?

Me as Cindy's explaining the stale ass happy family book: "oh god, we get it! Your family is so normal" 🥲
indy: "we get it bitch, your family is so functional!"

I love the flatshare!! It’s one of my favorite books. You do have to suspend some disbelief for the premise.

I tried to read the perfect nanny but gosh I hated it, so boring and I thought it was going to be something like "did she do it??? Did she??" But no… It was a "she did it" no mystery, nothing… Ugh it was disappointing
And gosh what a racist book!!!!

It might be a good idea to watch Jessie's (Bowties and Books) video about how white authors don't get to decide what counts as a thriller.

in a holidaze literally sounds like a hallmark movie about a girl that looped and re-did her wedding
until she left her fiance for his younger brother

You know, When no one is watching really reminds me of The southern book club’s guide to slaying vampires: for two thirds of the book it seemed like a totally different genre 🤔 and also sometimes the racism was so blatant it felt unrealistic. I wonder what pushes writers to bang the “I’m the bad guy” vibes on our heads in a thriller 🤨

Was a nanny and a teacher for a while and then realized I found kids super draining all the time, so I quit….murderous nanny risk aborted (barely).

“This book ended up being the most vanilla and stale book I’ve ever read in 2020.” I find some similarities between this and Cindy’s love life.
