Murakami: Men without women: Very good, just fiction. It is a lot of short stories.

Gnomon is great! Hark away is the son of the late great John Le Carre. Harkaway’s The Gone Away World is also brilliant.

Tuf Voyaging was originally a connected series of short stories published in Analog in the 70s and 80s. It's not particularly deep or meaningful but I always enjoyed the stories when they came out. Reminds me a lot of Poul Anderson's Polesotechnic League stories.

Fully justified and worthwhile charity shop rant.
Some of my recent hauls have been from Stockbridge in Edinburgh, which was flooded a week ago. So I’m keen to get back and try to help them out again. Two of them in particular have/had spectacular sci-fi sections.

I read Martin's Tuf Voyaging many years ago. At the time I thought it was pretty good. I might not like it as much after having read many of the books on your two 100 best books lists. His short story Sandkings is a much better work of science fiction. I am not sure how either compares to his Song of Ice and Fire series. I only read the first two books and then stopped because he writes too slowly. I am not going to read any more until he is done. Moid, thanks for all the work you do. I especially like your 100 best books list and the various top 10 lists. Most importantly, thanks for not including fantasy on your lists!

Moid, it's me again, for the third time, if you are reading this, I just wanted you to know that you don't need to re-read The Three Body Problem to continue the 2º book, why:
*The main characther of the first book, don't appear again.
*You just need to know the main plot of the first book: The aliens exist and they are coming Earth.
*the second book is complicated and a bit boring in the first 50%, and then BOOOOMMM it grows up so much you will not believe!

Learning the World is a fun first contact book where humans are the aliens coming to another planet. I first read Tuf Voyaging as separate stories of each voyage in an SF magazine, then a couple of years ago I bought the same edition you received, basically he helps planets solve problems with his seed ship and they get more than they asked for.

Gnomon is great! It's long but a good read IMO. Its a kind of world-spanning puzzle-ish post-modern kind of read. Also fun fact, Nick Harkaway is the son of John Le Carre.

How have you not read Nick Harkaway!? He’s one of my favorites! GNOMON is a MASTERPIECE ! Seriously, it is great. He’s so talented. The Gone Away World is my sentimental favorite but Gnomon is literary greatness. So happy for you that you’ve got Harkaway to discover. 🦈 I think about Gnomon often and it’s been two years since I read it.

Kafka On The Shore is fantastic, its probably my favourite Murakami. I didnt enjoy Killing Commendatore though in my opinon its one of his weaker works. Hard Boiled Wonderland is great as well.

IF "Tuf Journey" is the book I think it might be, it is the book Martian should be remembered for (screw GOT). A man on the spectrum has gained control of on of the most powerful ships in the galaxy (can "Terra form" planets almost at will). Every needy civilization wants his help, every corrupt government / organization wants the power (Dinosaurs in space back in the 80's).

16:18 intrigued me enough to research The Atrocity Archives and before 19:18 a cash register
somewhere in cyberspace went chingching. Good call, Levin; thanks for publicizing it, Moid.

So I visited my local book store a few days back. I suddenly noticed that I nowadays have a habit of picking a hardback from the shelf, and after looking it for a while, I knock it with my knuckles. Or what the hell they are, the middle joints of tubby fingers. Anyways, I wondered where I've picked up that habit… And now I saw you doing the same. Damn. I must be subconsciously imitating you. Well anyways, read the rest of books in 3 body problem, I think it's worth the effort.

Sci-Fi, Lovecraftian with humor is a good way to describe The Atrocity Archives. Also, for George R.R. Martin sci-fi, try Nightflyers (reminds me of Alien) and the short story Sandkings. I loved Armageddon Rag but don't know if that's your style.

When I fly back to the UK to visit my family in the Black Country I make sure I trawl all the charity shops in every town and village we visit. I always find a few gems, sci-fi and more. So I join you in your rant: BUY BOOKS IN CHARITY SHOPS!! AND PAY THEM EXTRA, THEY’RE CHARITY SHOPS FFS!!

The discussion with Mike from Mike's Book reviews brought out your love and his dislike for Moby Dick. Any chance you'll make a debate video where you and Mike put across your points?

My fave Sf series is probably Donaldson's The Gap Series but I rarely see it mentioned – is it a bit too nasty?

This man is a hyper-active phenomenon wrapped in an adolescent manic shirt, I love it!(the shirt.) This is perfectly sci-fi, the entire concept of being surrounded by books full of words, thoughts, ideas and worlds! Is a fantastic universe! (The one on the shelves.) Guess the jury’s out on the high-energy H.sapien but i think he survives. Mr. Rogers lasted for years(!) in a room with kinder-sized furniture; and his cardigan wasn’t nearly as stimulating at this (shirt!), …. let alone as (stimulating as) all these brilliant books!! If I was a betting girl, I’d bank on the Media Death Cult, living to see many more aeons!! ….
Put a ‘fiver’ on it?! – Perhaps we should send him some grub & a case of his beverage of choice. 😛 🚀 🍕 🍺
    – When ya gab this much, you’re bound to get thirsty!

Harkaway is excellent. I haven't read Gnomon, but Gone Away World and Angelmaker and some of my favorite books. Definitely Recommended. GAW has mimes and ninjas and the end of the world! How does that not sell itself?

GRRM's Sandkings is horror scifi and one of my all-time faves. Plus it's a short story so you don't have to invest too much time
