I'm gonna default to a classic/not YA: Margaret and I by Kate Wilhelm. It's more 'woo-woo' than sci-fi, but she IS a Nebula-award-winning author so I think it just nudges in under the line <3<3

Thank you for these recs! I haven’t heard of The Sound of Stars, but it sounds like something I’d love to check out. Adding the weight of the stars to my reading list as well!

yes The Lunar Chronicles still stands up as such a solid series! I feel like Marissa Meyer is so great at writing character relationships that I get pulled in even with tropes I don't love as much – and I love her friendship dynamics too
I just bought The Sound of Stars and hope to get to it in October!
I really liked the Starbound trilogy by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner! it's a series of companion novels so there's three different sets of main characters and three different romances (opinion is pretty split on which is the best one which I feel like is a good sign??) but they all connect into one story, similarly to the Lunar Chronicles. I found the overarching story to be compelling and there's some creepy atmosphere/a little mystery too, especially in book 1
