Sorry for your loss but The Book Refuge I'm sure was a pleasant distraction. I like to hear you analyze what didn't work in a book. I have yet to read Lisa Kleypas but I did pick up a couple of her books off of your recs. I'm glad to see your affection for her books does not automatically mean every book she writes gets a 5star from you. Loved the vlog.

Honestly if I had read Cold Hearted Rake before any other Lisa Kleypas book, I wouldn’t have have read another Lisa Kleypas book. While I liked Sugar Daddy not as much as other Lisa Kleypas books, if it was my first of her book that I had read by Lisa Kleypas, I would have picked up another Lisa Kleypas book. I knew going in that Sugar Daddy was women’s fiction. I’m not sure if I’m making sense, but neither are the best but Cold Hearted Rake is worse in my opinion.

🐴 Thank you for the cool video. I’m so sorry for the loss of your pet. People who don’t have pets don’t always understand that our pets are a part of our family and losing a furry family member can be as tough as it can get.

JUST BREAK MY HEART WHY DON'T YA LOL. I am totally kidding! I totally see everything you are saying by Sugar Daddy and the reason I loved the book so much was because of Liberty's journey and he relationship with her sister.

Sorry for your loss. 🐶 🙏 Agree with you on Sugar Daddy. Although Lisa Kleypas is my favorite historical romance author I'm Not a big fan of her contemporary romance. I do love Blue Eyed Devil, but I feel that is by far her best contemporary romance. So many times publishers/marketers do this to books that are really Women's Lit/Fiction. (Beach Read, One to Watch ,etc) So frustrating -just because she has a date during the course of the book does Not make the book a Romance. So glad you got some hang out time with your Book Tube Bestie

Lisa Kleypas is not angsty? lol Have you not read her Hathaway series or Wallflower series? It's angst personified. 😩😅 Again the Magic will make you want to pull your hair out from the angst.

I can understand your reasoning why you didn’t care for Sugar Daddy. I liked the book, but I did have issues with it (not a fan of love triangles and not a fan of expecting a romance and the majority of the book is women’s fiction). I think my favorite book from the Travis series was Blue Eyed Devil. She also did another contemporary series that I read one book from and I didn’t like it. I much prefer her historical novels

It’s interesting, when Sugar Daddy came out, it was NOT marketed as a romance. It WAS marketed as women’s fiction. I know that since I’ve been reading her since 1992. When Strangers Marry was the first book of hers, I read it when it first came out and I bought and read every book since then. When the news came about Sugar Daddy, I was devastated. Not only was she not writing a historical, but it was Women’s Fiction, but it was in first person and I did not read first person. And I certainly did not read women’s fiction. And then it was worst of all, there was some romance, but it was a triangle.
I felt betrayed. I’d already lost some very well loved authors to other genres. Tammy Hoag, Penelope Williamson were rough loses but losing Lisa Kleypas, of all authors, my favourite of all of them, was the hardest cut of all.
It was out a while before I could bare to read it and then only because I found it at a deeply reduced price. And because I came into it rather bitter and not expecting at all to even like it. But much to my shock and absolute delight, I loved it.
So your experience was totally different from mine years later. You came into it expecting a romance and your right, it’s not a romance, therefore you were so disappointed. I can totally see and understand your disappointment, whereas mine was the opposite. I was expecting to be disappointed, with a lacklustre romance and I was happy to see there was as much as a romance as there was. At the time I thought she was done with historicals and I was sad. But then I read Blue Eyed Devil and it was very much a romance and I adored it. So at that point in time I was good if all she was going to right was contemporaries and all was right again in my reading world.
I happened to meet her in person between Sugar Daddy and Blue Eyed Devil. She even knew who I was. I was gobsmacked at that. It was at a RWA conference in Dallas. My husband had died less than a year before that from cancer and it was romance, and Lisa Kleypas, Pamela Clare, who was writing Colonial romance at the time and Tara Janzen (RS) who helped get me through those times. I have a blog, though I’ve not been nearly as active on it as I was back then. In coping with my grief once I lost my husband, I started this really hard core campaign on what a great and amazing and best hero ever Derek Craven is. I was relentless in making sure as many people read Dreaming of You as I could. Then a very dear friend joined in, only she championed Sebastian from Devil in Winter. Thus began the debate over who is the better hero. When I recently started watching romance book tubes, I was astonished to see it’s still going on. We would chase each other across Romancelandia, each claiming our hero was better. This was over 15 years ago now.
And that’s why I’m so delighted you and Jenn met and spent time together. Sybil was at the RWA conference too and she’s a lifelong friend now. You and Jenn have that special bond and it’s wonderful to see. Sybil, as well as some other romance fans I still “see” on Twitter are so very important to me and I’m so happy you have that too.
Well, that was a lot more rambling than I thought it would be. But your thoughts took me back and warm nostalgia took over. We are a true tribe, us romance readers.
