The Nikki Sloan books were weird. I understand the age gap trope but the dad going after the son's soon to be wife and they son just going alone was just weird and dumb. I did listen to all three to see if I was missing something but at the end I was just like this book is not for me. I didn't like it. I would not listen to it again

Book recomendation: Private Arrangments, Sherry Thomas
    Historical Romance/Industrial time period.
    Marriage in Crisis/Second chance/Angst

An estranged married couple on the verge of divorce battle through their attraction towards each other to see if there is any chance they could still make their marriage work.

I'd be curious to know your thoughts on this book. I am not a huge fan of romance as a genre but this one stood out to me, and felt unique, maybe because I don't read a ton of romance? But I also wondered if you had any recommendations that were similar to this book?

    Regarding this book:
I can see if some readers might think this book moves a little slow, though I didn't but more importantly I think it can be offputing to some people who pick up this book expecting a traditional romance, and I don't think this book is marketed well to set up what kind of story it tells. I think its good to know going into this book that the two main characters are not good people to begin and their relationship in nothing to be idolized. But sometimes their is something to be learned in indulging in stories like that. I think this book gets away with some of its more despicable situations because both characters, as immoral as they are, do feel deep remorse for their actions, and struggle through the decisions they make. Also the author does a good job of explaing every thought process each character has up until the decision is followed through. So the character's choices, though maybe not justified, are at the very least understood. Though this book does fall into the trap of character just not communicating with each other but, it doesn't bother me the way it does in bother books for some reason. 🤷‍♀️

The only one of these books I've read even some of was People we meet on vacation. I know people seemed to love it and because of that I plan to pick it up again. I only got through about 60 pages. It felt to slow for me (I don't think I'm a slow burn fan) but the biggest thing was even though I knew it was romance it definitely felt as though the book read like women's fiction

The Initiation would've been a fantastic book if the main character had fewer morals lmao. If she had just given in and really enjoyed the taboo-ness of it all it could've been great! But her inner dialogue just made the entire thing uncomfortable.

I feel like if you did “things I don’t like in a romance” two of your main things would definitely be like, when they get together and the book just keeps going, and when they’re “dark” but they’re really dark-lite.

The one thing in The Initiation that happened did make me super uncomfortable, but, the end definitely made me want to read the next one. I don’t know if I’ll hate it, but, I need to know.

Argh, I hated you deserve each other. I didn't deserve to read that book. I skipped lots of pages and remember not really liking the characters nor what became of them 😕

OMG, I think I'll have to read one of these Hades/Persephone romances. I love Broadway and I became enamored of Hadestown when it came out. It's so so good 👍🏾

The Roommate? Oh Lord, I loved them. Josh was so so sweet. The way he helped Clara. And he had all these esteem problems like she did. I thought the romance was hot. OTOH, The Intimacy Experiment was da bomb!

I completely agree with the first two and i'm currently reading People We meet on Vacation and feel the same. Soooo much going back and forth. I like them and i'm invested in the romance but I wish they would focus more on the present 🤪

Initiation was just WILD. I like to push my comfort zones in reading bc I like to give all my reads a chance but Initiation was just a lot 😂 although it was mostly because it was confusing if the scenes with the old man were okay? or just straight up disgusting 🤢

omg i couldn't agree more re: The Roommate. i liked the hero and the attention the author drew to the porn industry and sex workers, but the heroine was so unlikeable; literally just a spoiled rich girl who hasn't had a problem in her single life and it showed!

I liked It Happened One Summer but I think that was because I really like Tessa Bailey's writing style and I was experiencing angst fatigue. You have to be in the right mood for it.

    Nordic King-felt really cheesy
Sweet Dandelion- h felt really immature/annoying
    Fifty shades- Not written well
Bound by Honor-H was supposed to be big tough guy but was a wuss/scared to do anything with his bride when they married.
In Five Years- Not a romance

I did not like The Initiation too, I mean there's nothing new material in the narrative, it's just like another billionaire romance/arranged marriage. I agree Twisted Love is so tropey, and the pacing is weird 😕. Thankfully Twisted Games is so much better.

You Deserve Each Other was a DNF for me after 2 chapters. The characters annoyed and bored me.

I was really disappointed with People We Meet on Vacation. Like you, I really loved Beach Read, but EH's 2nd book has a weird pacing. It's so slow, the reveal was very anti-climactic, and the characters are not doing it for me. Poppy and Alex are so bland separately and as a couple. I don't know why a lot of people loved it, maybe because it's so light and easy or maybe they haven't read a lot of romances yet.

I really enjoyed Neon Gods and loved their relationship but I agree that I was very confused with the whole beef between Zeus and Hades' father.

Not a fan of Emily Henry. Didn't like Beach Read either. 😴 The Initiation was OK. I could have done without the old board room guys, but if they had been younger it would have worked for me. Tessa Bailey is just Not an author I enjoy in general. I just find her stuff very boring. She is one of the author's that I refer to as Meh Contemporary.

I completely agree with you on a touch of darkness. It just didn't work for me and I was so annoyed with persephone for the entirety of the book that I couldn't connect with anything that was happening.
