Burn it down to the ground already | July Romancelandia

I’m recapping The Vivians and the steps I think need to be taken at the RWA next. Also the steps we can take as readers. Let’s discuss why a book sub genre is …

I'm torn right now. As a member of RWA (2 years), I want the organization to evolve and grow. With the latest scandal over the win of a questionable book, I don't know what to think now. Well I do, but I've made my feelings clear on the organization's forums, which are one fire right now.
I did have the opportunity to read the prologue of 'At Love's Command' and I had no issues with it, assuming that the hero would have made drastic changes with a redemption arc by the end of the book. Some readers/reviewers stated that he did evolve, while others said he didn't. In any case, I think that with the Romance with Spiritual Elements/Inspirational category, more books should be sought out and included that aren't based on Christianity.
I'm aware of the Twitterstorm, although I hate Twitter and don't use it.

Thank you as always for the recap! I don’t follow any of this on social, so when even I heard about the racist book winning I knew things were bad

One of the most depressing things about the Vivians was being able to watch every category and think of five books that should have been nominated and not see them there. You had such a good point about the “spiritual themes” books needing to include more than Christian fiction. The Intimacy Experiment explored themes of Jewish spirituality and was so fantastic, and I know there are tons of other books out there exploring tons of different kinds of spirituality. It’s frustrating to see bad books picked from many less than awesome choices to begin with (although there were a smattering of good books in the nominees).

Burn it down. 🔥 That'd be better than leaving it for the racists to claim. It takes time, energy and money to start an organization like this; the NWLs shouldn't benefit from all the work that's already been done.

I'm not familiar with the entire nomination and voting process, but my reaction was "who are these people?" I've read like 3 authors from that entire list and was familiar with a few more, so I can't even take the awards seriously. Congrats to the winners, but I don't think The Vivians are representative of the genre at all.

I was really hoping to see them do better but I also trusted people like Courtney Milan who very clearly explained why they would not. The live discussion was great and I got a few recommendations from you all that are waiting for me on my kindle.

I don't get HOW anyone could read that book and think that's okay?!

Edit to add: I read that article about Vivian Stephens last year and that was when I realized that she is not dead! OMG!!! 😤🤬

Corporate change is hard enough when 95% of your employees are on board. In this situation, I don’t think it’s possible 🔥
